While working my way through university, I was a work peer of Guido, at Dan Hasson Clothiers. Guido represented perhaps the last of the generation of true gentlemen and held his court in the back room of the store. That’s the true centre of activity at any fine clothier. And Guido was more than the master tailor for the shop. He cut through the sales process and told customers, straight up, how a garment fit and looked on them. And they trusted him, and his opinion, perhaps more than anyone else. I’d say “Makes you look like a million bucks!”. “No,” Guido might counter – “that looks terrible on you.” And he was always right. The customer would laugh, I’d frown, and we’d go back to the rack or shelf, looking for an alternative.
In addition, Guido was a consistent and respected dispensary of advice, wisdom and recommendations about school, life, love and work: The Oracle of White Oaks Mall. I’ve thought of him many times over the last thirty years. He will be missed on Earth, but received with anticipation and celebration in Heaven. I can hear the departed souls saying, in unison: “We haven’t had any damned clothes that fit us properly, in a hundred years or so.”
Arrivederci e buona fortuna, Guido.
