I am truly saddened to hear about the passing of Mr. Gowdy. I was a student of his in 1988 at St. Mark's elementary and no other teacher left such a lasting impression on me. He is one of reasons I became a teacher myself, and I am so grateful he planted that seed. He was such a cool guy - most of my memories from elementary school are from his class - we were constantly creating, moving and working together. We made puppets that Jim Henson would be proud of, took our drama show on the road, and constantly performed athletic feats that made us proud. I owe a lot to you Mr. Gowdy - thanks for being such an inspiring teacher and human being. My heart goes out to your family.

My deepest condolences to the Gowdy family. I had the pleasure of teaching alongside Pat & Nancy at St Kateri School many years ago. As a new teacher, Pat was a great mentor to me. When I think back to those days, opening a new school, Pat made coming to work fun. He always had a joke or a limerick to brighten every day. He organized a staff volleyball night every year and was always available for "choir practice' on Fridays after school. I am truly saddened by his passing. May you find comfort in knowing that Pat made a difference in so many people's lives and his spirit will live on for years to come. Sincerely, Michele Specht

We were very sorry to hear of Mr. Gowdy's passing. Although he was our principal for only a short time, we have lots of great memories of him. One of the things we loved about Mr. Gowdy being our principal, was that he would start each of our days together with a laugh. Each morning he would tell us a "punny" joke over the PA and finish it off with a noise from his pocket sound machine. He was always happy to wear his Leafs gear to school or sport some blue and white - especially on game day or after a win. He made an effort to come visit us in class, sometimes he would help us with our work or hold us accountable for our actions at recess. Despite just meeting us, he cared for us and wanted to make sure we were happy and doing our best. He made our school a better place, his energy is missed.

Pat possessed a ready wit that manifested itself in japes and jokes that were as original as they were ribald and observations that were often pointed but never hurtful. He was an immensely popular man and had the rare ability to own the room without bruising any egos. He was also a reliable source of some of the most wince-worthy puns ever uttered, and when he was on a roll, he was capable of trotting out a string of them that left any other punsters present both filled with awe and green with envy. For years, he sported one of the finest mustaches I've ever seen and while I commiserated with him when he had to shave it off (he lost a bet with a student), I never forgave him when he kept it off. I always saw him as a modern-day amalgam of Ambrose Bierce and H.L. Mencken, with a bit of Will Rogers thrown in. He left a hole the size of the Chicxulub Crater when he left us so suddenly, and he will be missed terribly.

Our sincere and deepest sympathies to Pat's family and friends. Our family had the pleasure of having Pat as our interim principal last year. During an unprecedented year, he stepped in and lead with professionalism -and most importantly a flexible and down to earth approach. One of our children has multiple complex needs, and needed to attend school in person during lock downs. Pat was welcoming, accommodating and shared his great sense of humor and people first common sense approach. Our child was lucky to hear stories about his beloved family, especially his granddaughter. Showing his inclusive and fun nature...he even brought his pup to school for our child to play and learn with one day "thought he'd like another buddy to be with today in class :) "
We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers.

Ellen and I were very saddened to hear of the passing of a long time friend. We attended CCH many, many years ago with Pat. We played hockey and football together at CCH at golfed at Thames Valley and I will always remember his “lucky” green socks with the gold trim! Although we have not seen as much of each other as we would have liked, each time we re-connected it was as though there was no time between visits.
Pat had an infectious personality and drew people to him so easily. He was a great friend, a great leader and someone we will all miss tremendously.
Ellen considers herself extremely fortunate to have been able to teach with Pat’s daughter Lisa at St. Anne before she retired this past January.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Gowdy family at this very difficult time.

To the Gowdy family:
My sincere condolences over your loss. My family and I will say a prayer for your strength during this difficult time….and we will think fondly about Pat.
I’d like to share a memory: Pat was the principal at St. Paul Catholic School when my two sons attended. No matter what level of club hockey the kids played, they loved playing on the school hockey team. He knew that. At the championship tournament, Pat quietly asked me to take the head coaching role when he couldn’t make it - he didn’t make a big declaration, he just said I have an appointment that I can’t miss. I knew Pat was getting treatment then, and he even came to watch after his treatment. In my mind, that said a lot about him - he wouldn’t take the spotlight away from the kids, he was low key and he prioritized others ahead of himself. Years later, when I would see him when I visited Highland, I always thought about, and respected, his unselfish nature. Pat will be missed. They don’t make people like Pat these days.

Pat was a great friend, and he will be missed by many. He was a dedicated and hard working professional becoming a principal and managing his lawn care business for many years. To say he took great pride in his work is an understatement. It was not uncommon during the winter months for Pat to be up before 5 to tend to the rinks he built at his schools for ALL students to enjoy. He was one of the key organizers and a coach in the annual Catholic school hockey tournament where he would teach that “the best play in hockey is a well positioned pass”.
Pat enjoyed hockey most of his life. Just in the last few days he told me how thankful he was to have so many meaningful relationships from playing hockey and that he was hopeful he might be able to return to the ice. He was a loyal and informed supporter of teams he followed especially the Leafs but also the Jays, Bills, Knights and Wolverines. He was fierce competitor in hockey, baseball and golf but never at the expense of good sportsmanship or proper etiquette.
Above all there was nothing more important to Pat, or anything he was more proud of, then the five children he raised with Nancy.
Matt, Sandra, David, Lisa and C-man Please accept my sincerest condolences.
