With the same strong will and determination that defined her life, Laura María Ardila Plata left us on Friday June 22, 2018. Mom fought a brave battle against cancer but is now in peace, surrounded by her father Carlos Humberto Ardila Navas, mother Berta Plata de Ardila, brother Carlos Humberto, aunt Maria Dyer, and grandmother Zoila Rosa Plata de Plata. They are likely having coffee and catching up as you read this!

Laura was born in San Vicente de Chucurí, Colombia, but lived most of her life in Bogotá until moving to Canada. Mom worked as a Medical Laboratory Technologist but everyone knows her true passion was technology. She was often busy helping her friends with their various devices, and mom never met a movie she could not download!

Laura was a bright, generous and kind woman who had a big heart. Laura always took on life's challenges with a smile on her face and she was the bravest woman we knew. Moving to Canada with her teenage daughter is no easy task but together they persevered. Although Laura and Lina had their ups and downs like any mother and daughter do, they shared a unique bond and there are no words to describe the love they had for each other. Her absence leaves Lina lost but she knows that her mom, wherever she is, will help her find her way.

Laura will be deeply missed by family and friends here in London, her native Colombia, the United States and Italy. Laura came from a large family and her brothers César, Javier, Armulfo, Mauricio, and Iván and sisters Raquel, Luz Mireya, Berta Sonia, and Patricia will remember her fondly. As well, Laura had many nieces and nephews that she cared for very much. She had a special bond with her sister Raquel and nephew Carlos Hernando, and Lina knows their hearts are aching too. Laura and Lina are so fortunate to have so many friends and family in London that have supported them since they moved to Canada in November 2000. People like you are hard to find. You have filled our lives with laughter and joy at times when we wanted to call it quits. Laura left this world knowing you will support Lina through the tough times ahead. Although Lina constantly joked saying she was going to have "too many adoptive families," your love and support will help her thrive and move forward.

Mom was able to spend her final days at St. Joseph's Hospice. We didn't think we would have enough time to make it there, but the waiting was worth it! St. Joseph's Hospice is a magical place, and Lina will forever be indebted to the Hospice, which helped Laura die with compassion and dignity. Although the past seven months were very challenging for Laura and Lina as her disease progressed, Lina would like to thank all the health care professionals that helped them cope with the many challenges they tackled.

At Laura's request, cremation has taken place. Visitors will be received at the John T. Donohue Funeral Home, 362 Waterloo Street at King Street, London on Tuesday, June 26th, from 2-4 and 6-8 o'clock. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Martin – St. Francis Church, 46 Cathcart Street, on Wednesday, June 27 at 10 o'clock. Interment in St. Peter's Cemetery. Donations to St. Joseph's Hospice in lieu of flowers would be appreciated.

Con la misma tenacidad y determinación que definieron su vida, Laura María Ardila Plata nos dejó el viernes 22 de junio del 2018. La Mami luchó una batalla valiente contra el cáncer, pero ahora está en paz, rodeada de su papá Carlos Humberto Ardila Navas, mamá Berta Plata de Ardila, hermano Carlos Humberto, tía María Dyer y abuela Zoila Rosa Plata de Plata. ¡Probablemente estén tomando café y adelantando cuaderno mientras leen esto!

Laura nació en San Vicente de Chucurí, Colombia, pero vivió la mayor parte de su vida en Bogotá hasta mudarse a Canadá. La Mami trabajó como Bacteriológa, pero todos saben que su verdadera pasión era la tecnología. Ella siempre estaba ocupada ayudandole a sus amigos con sus computadores, celulares y demás aparatos electrónicos y ¡no había película que La Mami no pudiera piratiar!

Laura fue una mujer brillante, generosa y amable que tenía un corazón muy grande. Laura siempre asumió los desafíos de la vida con una sonrisa en su rostro y era la mujer más berraca que conocíamos. Mudarse a Canadá con su hija adolescente no fue fácil, pero juntas perseveraron. Aunque Laura y Lina tuvieron sus altibajos como cualquier madre e hija, ellas tuvieron una relación muy especial y no hay palabras para describir el amor que se tenían la una a la otra. Su ausencia deja a Lina desubicada, pero ella sabe que La Mami, donde sea que esté, la ayudará a encontrar el camino.

Laura será extrañada por familiares y amigos aquí en London, Colombia, Estados Unidos e Italia. Laura vino de una familia grande y sus hermanos César, Javier, Armulfo, Mauricio e Iván y sus hermanas Raquel, Luz Mireya, Berta Sonia y Patricia la recordarán con cariño. Además, Laura tenía muchas sobrinas y sobrinos a quienes ella quería mucho. Tenía un vínculo especial con su hermana Raquel y su sobrino Carlos Hernando, y Lina sabe que a ellos también les duele el corazón. Laura y Lina son muy afortunadas de tener tantos amigos y familiares en London que las han apoyado desde que se mudaron a Canadá en noviembre del 2000. Las personas como ustedes son difíciles de encontrar. Han llenado nuestras vidas de risa y alegría en los momentos en que nos queríamos rendir. Laura dejó este mundo sabiendo que apoyarán a Lina en los tiempos difíciles que se avecinan. Aunque Lina bromeaba diciendo que iba a tener "demasiadas familias adoptivas," su amor y apoyo la ayudarán a prosperar y seguir adelante.

La Mami pudo pasar sus últimos días en St. Joseph’s Hospice. No pensamos que tendríamos suficiente tiempo para llegar allí, ¡pero la espera valió la pena! St. Joseph's Hospice es un lugar mágico, y Lina siempre estará en deuda con el Hospice, porque ayudaron a Laura a morir con compasión y dignidad. Aunque los últimos siete meses fueron muy difíciles para Laura y Lina a medida que su enfermedad progresaba, Lina quiere agradecerles a todos los profesionales de la salud que las ayudaron a afrontar todos los desafíos que enfrentaron.

A petición de Laura, la cremación ya se ha llevado a cabo. Pueden acompañar a la familia en la Funeraria John T. Donohue, 362 Waterloo Street, London, el Martes 26 de Junio de 2-4 y 6-8pm. La Misa va a ser en la Iglesia St. Martin – St. Francis, 46 Cathcart Street, London, el Miércoles 27 de Junio a las at 10am, seguida por el entierro en el Cementerio St. Peter’s. Se agradecerán las donaciones al St. Joseph’s Hospice en lugar de flores.
