Joe Marotta was one of the kindest, smartest and fun gentleman I have ever met and he certainly was a true gentleman. How lucky was I to have known this entire family of Marotta's and to have spent so much time with them growing up and at the cottage. Joe gave the speech to the bride at my wedding and he was as he always was - complimentary, funny, smiling, well spoken and much more.
I will remember his wonderful welcome whenever I came to visit and his love of life and laughter. See you in the next room Joe. Love Linda

Having met Dr. Marotta only a few times, I quickly fell under his magic spell! Clearly a man of great love, great compassion, great humour and great intellect. And so...his passing is met with deep sadness and the need to reach out and speak of the wonder that is Dr. Marotta. My prayers are with all his family (especially Mrs. Marotta and my friend Miss Margie) and dear friends and colleagues who certainly miss his physical presence but know that he is with them always and everywhere. The lessons of his magic carry on!

Dear Joe,
You were my cousin, my friend and my mentor. I can still hear your voice on the phone "there are three things you need to know about 'this'......" I learned so much. Your support during Richard's brain surgery and after was a godsend. Loved your visits to Victoria and our golf outings and St. Patricks Day celebrations with you, Peg and your Victoria medical friends. I love the picture of Joe and I that was posted from our visit to your place a couple of summers ago.

In 1967 I was referred to Dr Marotta who confirmed the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. He saw my anguish and told me that he had followed over 400 cases, and no two cases had progressed in the same way. Dr Marotta shared his belief that there is a personality factor, that people who keep up their spirits and stay busy do much better. His words were a blessing that carried me through rough times. Today I am 72, symptom free and, planning my next hiking trip.
God Bless you, Joe Marotta.

Dear Peggy and Marotta kids;
All of the 7 Quinn siblings, your old neighbours from 101 Sylvan, send our deep condolences. There is nothing as hard as losing a parent as we know only too well having lost both of ours too young. When we arrived on Sylvan in March of '62 our mom made it a triumvirate of Saint Mike's trained nurses at 97, 99, and 101. Dr. Marotta and all of you made moving into that neighbourhood a great experience. We have many fond memories of Dr. Joe and your family. One that stands out for me was your dad telling me of the birth of my newest sister, Frances, when we were out on the driveway between our houses. He was a wonderful example of a great life lived.
All the best;

Patti's deck, Port Credit, not sure of the celebration or year..,, but this man made me feel that I mattered, he was totally interested in my story. There and then the love affair began between Dr. Teddy Bear and nanc and it still lives on. Mom and Dad Marotta have been my surrogate parents for so many years and personal milestones. I am so grateful and humbled to be included in this amazing family. I have nothing but love, affection and respect for all of you. Sending all my heartfelt condolences. Sistah Nanc (I am the oldest)

Dear Mrs. Marotta,
What a remarkable man, friend and father. I am still amazed how he diagnosed my mother's illness over dinner in 10 minutes just by talking to her and observing. Many doctors in Holland and Belgium could not even get close to a diagnosis. He was absolutely correct that it would heal on its own in about two years. It did.
Much love from Ernie (Calgary), Monique (Holland), Carla (Holland) and Mark (Holland) as well. We all have huge memories of your family during our family's time in Toronto.

Dear Margie, Mrs. Marotta & family,
I had the privilege of meeting your father/ husband on a few occasions while we were neighbors. Based on the obituary & the condolences written, I can be certain having met him was a privilege.
A number of years ago, my best friend was relaying stories of the many Drs. she had come across trying to sort out her many health issues. She had mentioned seeing "an old fashioned Dr" from St. MIkes who travelled into Toronto from London. "He was pleasant, took his time, listened to my complaints & made me feel confident I had been referred to the right Neurologist". I knew right away it was Dr. Marotta.
On behalf of my family, please accept our condolences.

Dear Peg and family,
Learning of Joe's death saddened me greatly. He was an absolutely remarkable man. His influence on me and my professional life cannot be over-stated. He had an immeasurable impact on my choice of Medicine, Neurology (I have repeatedly told the story of how I had major difficulty initially deciding whether it was the man or the field that captured my interest) and finally Movement Disorders. He was a gifted teacher and a wonderful and generous mentor. His love of his chosen field inspired all who had the pleasure and good fortune of working with him. I will always remember the Friday morning CPCs at St. Mike's when all the house-staff lined up to get in, masochistically hoping to be chosen by Joe to discuss the case or answer a challenging question. His love of family was also inspiring and we were fortunate enough to spend a memorable week at the cottage where he had some early practice at being a grandfather with our children. Finally, his sense of humor was legend. He was a great story and joke teller. I once wrote to him asking for a joke that I remembered him telling (about 2 Russian soldiers passing water on the side of the road in Northern Siberia). In sending me the joke (I still have the letter) he wrote "PS - During my career I aspired to teaching students Neurology - I never did think I would be remembered as a kind of Italian Bob Hope!!" Well, he will be remembered as that and so much more. Sadly I cannot attend the service but I will spend some quiet time that day thinking of him and everything he meant to me.
Love,
Tony Lang

Janet and I were saddened to hear that Joe died. He was one of my most revered teachers. I applied in 1968 to spend a year with Dr. Marotta, as I heard he was the best clinical teacher of neurology. The system was of a rotation system, but they eventually allowed me to be his resident at St. Mike's for the year. He was a wise, empathetic, sensitive, cheerful clinician with a famous sense of humour. As a grateful patient said at the time, "Dr. Marotta, you have panache". He certainly did, and he was very happy with the compliment. He and Peg were very kind to Janet and me and our four young children. My only embarrassing memory was of an event a few years later when we hosted them with some of their children in Nova Scotia and crowded us all in our VW camper van to visit Peggy's Cove and ran out of gas on a desolate foggy stretch of highway. It was always a delight to see Joe and Peg together.
My condolences to the family on the loss of this lovely and inspirational man.

Sincerest condolences on Joe's passing, what a wonderful man, caring physician and warm, compassionate human being - someone to look up to, admire and respect. We'll fondly remember a long, exemplary and productive life well-lived. So many memories from summer cottaging in the Kawarthas. We would have liked to pay our respects at the service but unfortunately will be out of the country on a previously arranged trip - however our thoughts and prayers will be with the extended family. Rest in peace Joe, and take up your reward in your rightful place in heaven. To borrow an Irish expression, "may he have been half an hour in heaven before the devil even knew he was dead".
