Obituary of Matthew Rumas

RUMAS, Matthew Died peacefully at St. Joseph's Hospice, London, on Saturday, July 9, 2016, Matthew Lawrence Rumas in his 90th year. Much loved husband for 64 years to the late Anne Rumas (nee Dudich). Dear father of Steve Rumas (Carolyn Paige), Carol Martin (Dave Martin, Kelowna, B.C.) and Mike Rumas. Proud grandfather of Matthew Vernon Rumas (Tonya Hall), Paula Rumas (Leo Echeverry), Jeff Rumas (Alyssa Pietraszko), Christopher Rumas (Erika Provenzano), Ken Martin, Paul Martin, Brianne Rumas and Morgan Rumas. Great grandfather of Matthew Alexander, Caleb, Benjamin and Finnegan Rumas; and Natalia and Jacob Echeverry. Survived by brother John Rumas. Predeceased by brother Sylvester. Matthew emigrated from Poland as a young child with his parents and two older brothers. An excellent student in school, Matthew left school, and became a carpenter at the CNR carshops to help support the family. He then moved to a second career as a fireman in the City of London, when the city underwent an annexation. He served the city in this capacity for 25 years, from 1961 to 1986, when he then retired with the rank of Captain. Visitation will be at the John T. Donohue Funeral Home, 362 Waterloo Street at King Street, London, on Friday, July 15, 2016 from 2-4 and 7-9 o'clock. Prayers on Friday evening at 7 o'clock. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Peter's Cathedral Basilica (corner of Richmond and Dufferin) on Saturday, July 16, 2016 at 10am. Interment to follow in St. Peter's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Joseph's Hospice, 485 Windemere Road in London would be appreciated. The family wishes to especially thank the nurses and staff at St. Joseph's Hospice for their very attentive care and compassion.
