Obituary of Francis Dias

Francis Dias MBBS MS FRCS(C).

Francis Dias passed away peacefully at home on the evening of January 1st, 2021 surrounded by his family. He was born in Bombay India, the only child of Dr. Francisco Dias and Maria Bernardina Dias (nee Costa). He was baptized at the font of St. Francis Xavier in old Goa. Francis moved from Goa to Bombay to attend St. Xavier College. He then entered medical school at the University of Bombay. He graduated in 1957 and then did a residency in surgery, obtaining his MS. He then did further training in chest surgery before moving to Miraj, India where he worked in a missionary hospital doing cardio-thoracic surgery. He met and married Wreda deSouza who was a fellow resident in Bombay. Into this union, God blessed them with two sons, Bryan Francis and Michael Joseph. Wanting further training, he moved with his wife and son to Saskatoon and did further training in surgery. He obtained his fellowship from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He then entered into private practice for 20 years in Prince Albert Saskatchewan. He was among the first surgeons in Canada to perform laparoscopic cholecystectomies. He then "retired" to Hamilton Ontario and worked as a surgical assistant in the cardiac surgery program before retiring when his eldest son obtained his fellowship in Cardiology. The family moved to London in 2016 to be closer to family. He was proud of his family and his greatest pastime was spending time with his wife and two sons. He was a devout member of the Catholic Church and was proud of his Goan heritage. He had a gift for languages and was fluent in multiple languages including Portuguese and Italian, the latter of which he learned when he moved to Hamilton. He is survived by his beloved wife Wreda of whom he had been married to for over 57 years as well as sons Bryan and Michael.
