'Uncle' Gene was a special person to our family. He never forgot my siblings and I at Christmas or on our birthdays, often gifting us with a treasured book and, when I got older, with my first magazine subscription. Whenever he called in at our family home on the lake in Bright's Grove, Gene was neatly dressed, gracious in character, and he smelled like the spearmint gum he chewed. Though I moved away from the area to go to school, I looked forward to connecting with 'Uncle' Gene on visits home, either for coffee at my parents' home or on a telephone call. Gene's courtesy, kindness, generosity, intelligence, and especially his loyal and longstanding friendship to my parents will always be remembered by our family. He was loved by all who knew him, and he loved to talk with pride of his own family. My heartfelt sympathies to all of you in Gene's family.

Gene was a faithful and devoted participant at many visitations and funerals over the years sharing his kindness to those in their time of grief. He was a colleague and friend of both our fathers, and as we entered the same career, he continued to show support and kindness to both of us.
What a beautiful legacy....to be remembered for. Please know we are thinking of you during this difficult time.

Mr. McCaffrey gave my father his first job as a teacher in Sarnia at Alexander Mackenzie high school and whenever I visited the school, he was always so kind. He bought Girl Guide cookies from me and treated the youngest of kids with respect. Later on he was my history teacher and principal at East Lambton secondary school. He was a tremendous educator. I met him a few years ago in Petrolia and he was the same warm, generous man I remember, and he looked exactly the same. RIP Mr. McCaffrey.

We're so sorry to hear of Gene's passing. He was a stand-up person, highly respected and my principal when I taught at St.Clair Secondary school in Sarnia. Gene always had kind things to say and had a genuine interest in your health and well-being.We saw Gene and Helen over many years at Mustang football games in London.Always a football fan and former coach. Gene will be sadly missed by all who had the privilege to cross his path. R.I.P. Gene.

My sincere sympathies to you Helen and the rest of the family. I was truly blessed that our paths crossed while working together at Roger Gallaway’s Member of Parliament Constituency Office. Gene was one of a kind, one of the good guys. Keeping in touch was one of his great strengths. A phone call from him always left me feeling important and cared for. Thank you Gene for the imprint you have left on my heart.

Since our meeting at St. Patrick's HS in 1946, Eugene has been the "perfect" friend to me. I am now reading about Eugene in "Successful Aging" by neuroscientist Daniel Levitin who describes what he sees as the personality traits that contribute to long and happy lives. These include agreeableness, conscientiousness, compassion, dependability. Eugene gets an "A" rating in each category.
He is one of my heroes and mentors.
