MANNERS M.D., Douglas Oakley B.A. M.D. FRCS(c), FACOG. FACS. Passed away peacefully at his residence at Windermere on the Mount on Sunday December 15, 2013 in his 86th year. Devoted and beloved husband of the late Florence (May 2013). Proud and loving Dad of Linda Toivanen (John), Karen Hull (Hodge), Lorraine Manners and Douglas Manners (Alenka). Loving Grandpa to Kaitlyn and Megan Hull and Meredith and Hayley Toivanen. Brother of the late Joan Heck, John Manners and Charles Manners. Fondly remembered by his sisters-in-law Fern Manners, Caye Arnold, Peggy Black, Mary Greenhill, Beverley Arnold and brother-in-law William Arnold. Predeceased by his sisters-in-law Eleanor Ferguson and Dorothy Manners, brother-in-law John Arnold. He will be missed by his many nieces and nephews, extended family, colleagues and many friends. Douglas graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, The University of Western Ontario in 1956 and received the first McLaughlin Travelling Fellowship for Obstetrics in 1962. His professional career began at Victoria Hospital in London and saw him practicing internationally in Oxford, Liverpool, Sheffield, Stockholm, Vienna, and his favourite, Graz. He was on staff at St. Joseph's Hospital, London in Obstetrics for more than 36 years and was on the Faculty of Medicine at The University of Western Ontario. Born in Port Credit, Ontario he was very proud of his Irish roots and every employment he took on, from a young lad through his University years, was in pursuit of his one dream; to become a doctor. As his children, we are proud of the meaningful encouragement our father has provided to many families, nurses and fellow physicians. We know the positive effect his hands and heart have had on mothers and their babies; and we are so very thankful for his life and for his gifts of dedication, strength and love. He will be missed, but more importantly, he will be remembered. The family wishes to thank his doctor, Greg Gillis and his devoted caregivers, Debbie, Shannon, Catie, and especially the selfless and huge hearted Beth. Your commitment to our Dad's care kept him at home and assured us he was always safe and comfortable. Family and friends will be received at the John T. Donohue Funeral Home, 362 Waterloo Street at King Street on Wednesday from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Michael's Catholic Church, 511 Cheapside Street on Thursday December 19, 2013 at 10 a.m. Interment St. Peter's Cemetery.
