I was very saddened to hear of Jack's passing in early December. As a former Executive Director of Vanier Children's Services (2012-18), I appreciated his genuine interest and willingness to share the history of the organization with me. When we celebrated Vanier's 50th anniversary in 2015, Jack was happy to take the role of Honorary Chairperson along with Joan Smith the founding Board President. Jack also participated as a Community Member on the PR/Fund Development Committee when I arrived at Vanier as the Clinical Director in 2005. His presence was a valuable reminder of the importance of weaving the past and present together to inform the future of Vanier's development. I was very sorry to miss his Celebration of Life in late December. One last warm memory of Jack occured in July 2020, when he showed up at a Former CYWs funeral in New Hamburg...it was incredibly meaningful to the bereaved partner who also was a former staff member in the late 1970s.
I met him at the door and the first thing he did was to look around for other Vanier staff he knew. The Vanier Family was close to his heart. My sincere condolences to his family. His presence will be sorely missed by many. Joanne Sherin

Joanne,
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and memories of my Dad. Vanier and everything related to Vanier was indeed dear to his heart. We were fortunate to hear some wonderful stories from long-term Vanier colleagues including how he changed the employee Life Insurance benefit to be equal for both women and men.
Kind regards,
Lou Anne (Dubois) Carlson

Thank you to everyone that attended our Celebration of Life event December 27th, 2023, at Fox Hollow. And thank you to others that sent messages or spoke with me by phone and shared memories of my Dad. I meant to share some of those stories during our Celebration and instead may post them as Tributes. Also, I meant to share my own thoughts, as his daughter, so here goes:
I was fortunate to have many hours of one-on-one time with my Dad over the past few months as he/his body negotiated the details of his Final Exit (as he liked to say). Prior to this stage, and still enjoying his retirement freedom (to read whatever he wanted to read), time with my Dad was “on occasion” such as birthdays and holidays. Task-oriented. So, I am truly grateful for having time with my Dad in and out of the hospital, to support his tasks of daily living. I think we were proud of each other; me seeing him try his best and he seeing me as patient and competent. I felt helpful and appreciated. Eventually, all I felt was loved.
Did you ever hear the story about the Sooth-Sayer determination made decades ago when my Mom and Dad were maybe in their 40's? It was foretold that my Dad would live until he is 92, which seemed like forever. Of course, over time we dismissed this notion of a psychic prediction holding any power. We joked about it as he neared and then celebrated his 90th birthday in May 2021. By May 2023 he was still driving his car and meeting friends for lunch. It wasn’t until he was first hospitalized in late August 2023, when I found myself secretly thinking, so this is how it happens... Interestingly, he shared the same story privately with his Fox Hollow table-mates... That said, he really did live to 92!
Congratulations Daddy-o: "A life well-loved is a life well-lived" - Winslow Eliot
Love from your (only, favourite) daughter,
Lou Anne (aka Lou-annie-fandanny, Plump-Chunk, Louise Angelica, Lou)

Lou Anne, Patrick, John and all of the family.....I feel so blessed to have known your dear Dad for so many year and to have been part of the Dubois family's New Years celebrations for more years than I can remember. We have made many memories together not only on New Years Eve, but our summer celebrations at Big Cedar, sharing in a swim in your spectacular pool our many get togethers...and of course the very special trips I was invited to join the family on. I am truly grateful!
Jack was loved by all and he was a truly special friend to my Dad - I know he will be forever missed!
Sending love and prayers to each of you.

My condolences to my cousin’s and their families. I have lots of great memories growing up with family and Uncle Jack. He will be missed but not forgotten. I know that my father enjoyed seeing each other in the summer for their last drink together. RIP Uncle Jack

Jack was my boss, my mentor, and my friend. He served countless children and families with the same devotion and love he felt for his family. He built the capacity of MVCS as a respected children's mental health centre. What a legacy for everyone in London! I send condolences to Jack's family as well as his network of colleagues and friends.

Jack was not only a respected colleague, but a friend, with whom Judy and I enjoyed many evenings of fine wines and dining . I had the privilege of being on the selection committee , chaired by the late Joan Smith, who chose Jack to be the Director of the newly reconstituted MVCS. He brought with him the teachings of Fritz Redl, one of the founders of residential treatment for disturbed children. He ultimately was recognized by his colleagues, by becoming the head of Ontario Association of Children’s Mental Health Centers, as well as his fellow psychiatrists in chairing our Harley Street Group.Judy and I send our sincere condolences to the Dubois family. Hail and farewell, Jack.

My condolences to Jack's family and friends. He was a friend of my Dad, Bob Gladwell, for many years, and spoke fondly of him at his celebration of life earlier this year. I hope the stories and memories shared bring you some comfort.
