Obituary of Gerry Joseph Sleegers

On Friday, November 24th, 2023, after a long and courageous battle with cancer and with his family by his side, Gerry Joseph Sleegers died peacefully at Victoria Hospital, London, in his 74th year.  Our family wishes to thank the wonderful staff of the Victoria Hospital Palliative Care Unit who went far beyond what anyone could have asked.  We will keep you all in our hearts and always in our prayers.  To those who knew him Gerry was generous and kind, always giving the less fortunate a hand up.  He was funny and clever, always eager for adventure and new challenges, and filled to the brim with energy and enthusiasm. The knowledge gained through all his life experiences led him to become a machinist, salesman, auctioneer, kitchen designer, amateur photographer, fisherman and traveler.  But mostly Gerry will be remembered for his bravery when facing the many obstacles in his life, for his wonderful sense of humour and his wide smile.  He was always cheerful and optimistic, and loved to make people laugh.  He especially loved dancing and singing, and he served as President of the Triangle Sunday night Dutch youth dance club for several years in his younger years, a club that thrived and raised money for charity under his strong leadership.  Many couples who met there have since celebrated their 50th wedding anniversaries.

Gerry was predeceased by his parents Henry (2001) & Gerda (2004) and was the dear brother of Peter (2014) (Sue), Tony (2012) (Mary), Bill (Irma), John (2018) (Dorothy), Annette, Harry (Anna Marie), Joe (2022) (Inez, 1993) (Lori), Al (2019), Louis (Joanne, 2022), Jackie (Mike) and Joke (1947).  Gerry is also survived by his loving wife Corry and will be sadly missed by many nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Justin’s Catholic Church, 855 Jalna Boulevard, on Wednesday November 29 at 11:00am followed by interment in St. Peter’s Cemetery, London.  Memorial donations may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph “St. Joe’s Café” https://www.csjcanada.org/blog/st-joes-ca
