Katie Winter

Obituary of Katie Winter

At Mount Hope, on March 21, 2024, Katherine Marie (Katie) Winter died peacefully at the age of 99. Predeceased by her parents, Katherine (Rezman) and Stephen Winter and her beloved sister, Ida, Katie’s death marks the end of an era and the last of her family line. Born in Hungary December 19, 1924, the family emigrated to Canada when Ida and Katie were still young. Along with Ida, Katie lived in the family home until she moved to Mount Hope in 2019. Upon graduating from Sacred Heart Commercial School in London, Katherine worked for the Federal Government’s Department of Veterans Affairs until her retirement. While Ida enjoyed traveling the world over, Katie stayed home, commenting more than once that someone needed to take care of the house. Katie was fiercely independent, a hard worker around the house and skilled gardener of flowers and vegetables, widely recognized on the streets of east London, by her lovely print dresses and large rubber boots. She was a devout Catholic, an avid reader, especially of poetry and classical and Christian fiction, and bookkeeper extraordinaire! As tiny as she was, she was also a force to be reckoned with, insisting on her own high standards in every aspect of life. We would like to express deep gratitude to the staff of Marian Villa 4 for their wonderful care and kindness to Katie, as well as Dr. Mawji, O.T., physio and recreational providers, and spiritual care director, Karen Weima. A visitation will take place at St. Patrick's Church where Katie and her family were long time parishioners, 1251 Dundas Street, on Tuesday morning, March 26, at 10:30 followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 o'clock with Fr. Adam Gabriel as celebrant. Interment at St. Peter’s Cemetery. Katie and Ida generously supported many charities over many years. Those who knew Katie might wish to make a donation in her memory to a charity of your choice. (www.donohuefuneralhome.ca)
