It is with great sadness and deepest sympathy that I learned belatedly of the passing of my dear mentor and friend Professor Bergougnou. He was an intellectual giant and brilliant engineer, as well as a kind, human and humble individual, a rare combination of qualities in this day and age. I remember with fondness his stories of the war and growing up in occupied France. He was never short of a kind word or genuine concern for his students' well being. I will sorely miss him and I offer my deepest sympathy to the family.
