There are no words to describe my hurt at the lost of my love, and truly my best friend always and forever. We were in such a good place with the boys doing well and looking forward to supporting them as they move forward in their lives. We had been so preoccupied with Daniel working through Basic Taining, we were with him every step of the way. Chatting with him at the weeks end on speaker phone. We were both so proud of both our boys. As Patrick started at college working on Policing, Bill was the dad that was alway there, driving him, and waiting for him after late nights at work.
I first met Bill on a Canoeing Expediton in August 1985, he was so wonderful, and funny and immediately took to looking out for me, even when I did not expect him too. We both shared a passion for our cadet activities, and were creative together. We married in 6 Oct 1990, and welcomed our first baby boy in May 1992, and Patrick in Sep 1995.
We faced many life challenges together, from moving from Newfoundland, and reestablishing ourselves in new places. When the roads bought us to London Ontarion, it was scary move so far from our family and friends, but we faced it togher. He enjoyed his job at the London Catholic School Board, and the many people that made his day, he loved it so much he would do it for free, and often did when he worked the very early morning hours to set up for a 8am presentation, or evenings after hours setting up for a show. He took such care in his planning and executing his work.
Our life in the cadet program in Central Region was a challenging one. We had the opportunity to work with and meet many cadets and staff. Bill did this with a passion not understood by most. He championed so many young people not by how shiney their shoes were but by showing them respect, teaching with his humour approach, or sometimes more serious explanation depending on what was happening or going to happen. He was a musician, and enjoyed as a bandsman. As a cadet while in Banff Alberta was the lead drimmer in the Calgary Stapede Parade in 1977 taking first place. In those early days he went on to be Band Officer, at the 2415 Gonzaga Army Cadets Massed Bands, and we were huge and oh soooo good. He served Argonaut Training Center as a Company Commander from some 7 years, including serveral years Officer Commanding their Land Operations, including the water site and field training. He serviced Blackdown Cadet Training center for over 12 years,, Standards Officer, Operations and Company Commander on two occassions. He always sturggle with his duty to his family and his duty to job, But make no mistake he did his job, no matter the personal scarifices he made and he made many over some 20 years serving the Cadet Program.
He was a humble, never wanted a fust, he was kind and gentle, and funny....
I loved him so, rest now my Bill. you will be forever missed and loved.
Your wife
Marg

Dear Bill
I've attempted to write this several times, and just couldn't. I know your in a beautiful safe place now, probably pulling pranks. Such an honour and privilege to have had you and your family as neighbours.
I knew from the first meeting that I'd have to be on my toes with you.
The many times you talked on the front porch with Laurie Young and I. Funny, interesting, and a wealth of knowledge. Also trickster was written all over your face.
I got the great idea to hide your front porch chair. I waited till you folks got home from Tims then headed over. I couldn't wait for you to mention your missing furniture. Not a peep out of you, and I began to worry. I thought maybe you'd reported it stolen to the police.
I finally confessed, only to discover you knew all along. The many, many times you and Margaret went to the store for me when I was laid up from surgery. You and Margaret taking me to appointments, also mom got taken to an appointment. You folks never said no once.
I admired you, your knowledge, and the best neighbours we've ever had. Thank you Bill for the wonderfull hand of friendship you and. Margaret extended to us. I will keep in close contact with Margaret and the boys . I miss my late night smoking buddy. Our last conversation late that night was a tribute to your family, and pride you had in them.
Thank you for being our neighbour, friend, and fellow prankster
You were the best, and every time I go outback to smoke I look over the fence.
You had my deepest respect, and adoration.
We were blessed to have your family liive next door.
You are now resting peacefully, you are missed, and I'm humbled to have called you friend.
Good bye for now my friend, until me meet again.
Miss you
Judith Bia

Very sad to just learn of Bill's passing. I have many fond memories of Bill from when I was a young cadet in the 80's and he was a new cadet instructor. I can also remember when Marg joined as an instructor and shortly after, the courtship began. I eventually had the pleasure of working with both Bill and Margie as a cadet instructor. Bill was a passionate teacher and leader, full of personality and humour, and also a mentor and friend who was a positive influence in my life and the lives of many other young people. He will be missed but fondly remembered. My thoughts and prayers go out to you, Marg & family.

To Marg, Daniel and Patrick and both the Martin and Dobbin Families. I was away on vacation this week when I learned of the sudden and sad news of Bill's passing.I first met Bill and then Marg as part of The 2415 Gonzaga Cadet Family many years ago and had many opportunities to be in your presence since, including last at Blackdown two years ago. You can be very proud of your Dad and Husband. Bill was an inspiration and leader to many in the cadet movement. This is a life cut short that had such a positive and profound influence on so many young people in Canada. In Bill's sudden passing this will be a person that the world will sadly miss. My thoughts are with you as you grieve your personal loss and many will give you the shoulder you need to lean on. My Best Regards, Gerard

We lost an awesome friend, Bill Martin, who had a positive influence on so many lives. Bill was always generous with his time and his heart. There are so many Bill stories that I don't know where to begin. He was my leader when I was a kid, a role model when I was an officer and a friend as an adult. He was a good man and will be missed by all. Hugs, Kisses and Prayers are with Marg, Daniel, Patrick and the Martin/Dobbin family xoxoxo

I was deeply saddened to learn of Bill’s sudden passing. I like to think I had a small part in bringing Bill and Margaret together many years ago. I remember looking to recruit a promising young female cadet to join 2415 Gonzaga as a CIC officer when we introduced girls to an all male Cadet Corps. LCol Ally McPhee had seen Margaret instructing at Argonaut and told me to go watch her teach and lead cadets. I did that and was immediately impressed and interested in offering her a position at the Cadet Corps, which she accepted. She came to 2415 Gonzaga and was a huge asset to us. It was there that she met Bill and together they provided exceptional leadership to our Cadet Corps and the youth involved for many amazing years. Bill was an extraordinary musician, able to take a glockenspiel or snare drum and make it sound like magic. He provided amazing leadership to our exercises and expeditions. When it came to field training, I believe Bill was the finest CIC officer I ever worked with. It was his genuine concern and care for cadets in rugged field training activities that truly set him apart from everyone. He lead from the front, demanded high standards and accepted nothing less. A team player, he was always loyal. Bill went on to command and work with cadets for many years and it is these young people and the cadet program that benefitted from his unselfish service right up to his untimely passing. Bill was a hilarious and jovial person who made everyone feel good around him. I last spoke to Bill at Blackdown, when I visited a couple of years ago. We chatted about old times and had a great laugh. We have all lost a great friend and colleague in Bill Martin. Keli Jo and I extend our deepest condolences to the Martin and Dobbin families and in particular Margaret, Daniel and Patrick. “His life was gentle, and the elements So mix’d in him that Nature might stand up And say to the world “This was a man!” - Shakespeare, Julius Caesar Tom McGrath, Lieutenant Colonel

Captain Martin and I had the opportunity within Blackdown CTC to work together in 2014. It was at that time that I saw how passionate he truly was for the Cadets he commanded. Dedicated and zealously committed to those around him, he guided both officers and cadets alike to be strong, to be better. Captain Martin was also a wealth of knowledge that he unselfishly shared with me and all those around him. I can honestly say that Blackdown CTC will not be the same without Captain Martin. I wish Captain Marg Martin and the Martin family the best as my thought are with you during this difficult time.

Marg, Daniel and Patrick: I first met Bill when he was a member of the staff at 2415 Gonzaga RCACC. It was at the “Corps” that Bill met his future wife, Margaret. He loved the outdoors and taught many a cadet at home and at Argonaut summer camp to appreciate the outdoors. I can remember the many Sunday Mornings as band practice was under way. I can remember the first time Bill put together the Corps slide show for the final parade, those who were there remember the two slide projectors working together (no PowerPoint then). As I write I am looking at the book on the history of cadet corps in Newfoundland. Bill was on the committee that developed and wrote the book. So many good times, so many good stories. We are so sorry to hear of his passing. Paul and Janitia Westcott St. John’s NL.

Marg, Daniel and Patrick: Bill taught me glockenspiel in 1981 in the Gonzaga high school cafeteria in St. John’s Newfoundland. Later, it was rock climbing in Portugal Cove, and then canoeing the Gander River. He loved the Newfoundland Outdoors and taught a generation to appreciate it. I still remember how fiercely proud he was of his Chalker Place roots! Jump ahead thirty years and there the two of you were at my mother’s funeral, teasing my brother about his golf game. I called my father tonight – he’s not much for computers and Frank sends his condolences. There’s heavy hearts, but many great stories being told from Newfoundland to British Columbia about Bill, he touched so many people. We are so sorry to hear of his passing. May he rest in peace.
