Bill was a real character. He reminded me of Tim Conway with his constant smile and quick wit. He loved to tease and always put others around him in a good mood. It's no wonder my father Bert remained his lifetime friend after they met on the first day of school more than 70 years ago. They share a lifetime of memories. Bill will be remembered by all who met him as a real comedian. He had a special gift for entertaining. He will be sorrily missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Recently he quipped to my father that he was going ahead on to warm up a chair and put in a good word for dad with St. Peter. A character right to the end. My deepest condolences to Mona and the kids during this difficult time.

Aunt Mona,Stephanie,Paul,Tim and Catherine Our thoughts and prayers are with you these days as you deal with your loss. Uncle Bill - as most from the Ottawa Valley - had a gift for the gab and razor sharp wit. I still remember his speech from our wedding 20 years ago where he waxed about the good old days, saying, "If you remember the sixties, you weren't really there". His humour and warmth will be missed. St. Peter is in for a treat.

Dear Mona & the McGuire Family, Perhaps it was Bill's way to prepare us when he moved out of Salway last year. We will always remember the chats, the laughs, the hugs, the stories and the many teases over hockey, we won't mention any teams. Bill was a special man and we were so fortunate to have him as a neighbour for 23 years. He will be missed by all of us. Our deepest sympathy, The Fortin Family (Réjeanne, Maurice, Curtis, Conlan & Patrick)

Dear Aunt Mona, Steph, Paul, Catherine and Tim Words can't express how are hearts break for all of you. It is an awful thing to say good bye to someone who was so special. Uncle Bill was a man of great character and wit. I've always been grateful for the times I got to spend with him, Aunt Mona and mom listening to the three and their stories of growing up in the Valley over pots of coffee and a few glasses of wine. My love to all and Uncle Bill as you always would say "Right On" luv jenny

Dear Aunt Mona, Stef & Steve, Paul, Cath & Greg, Tim & Vikki, Madison, Jacob, Olivia, Grace, Meghan & Matt: Yesterday when I picked up the kids from school I told them the news of Uncle Bill’s passing. A few minutes later as we drove into our driveway I looked over at Con and noticed he was in tears. I asked what is it Con to which he replied “it is Uncle Bill.” A true testament to the effect your husband/father/grandfather had on all those who knew him even if only for just a short time. You are in our prayers! Love, Brian, Sherry, Tristan, Con & Brooklyn

The mere mention of Bill brings a smile to my face. He was a human blessed with a touch of leprechaun. Mischievous. Comical. Constantly chuckling. Master of the quip. And a marvellous storyteller, on paper and orally. He could find the humour in almost anything. And that kept everyone around him loose, no small feat in the stressful, daily deadline newspaper business. Early in my career at The Free Press, I was served with a libel suit for an investigative report on a cult. I told Bill I was scared. He looked at me with nary a hint of sympathy, unleashed one of his characteristic chuckling fits and said: "Kid, you're a real reporter now." My fears vanished with the notion that this was somehow a badge of honour, not necessarily a career killer. Everyone who worked with Bill, or hung out with him in the days when the beer flowed freely, has a personal collection of "McGoo" stories, almost all of them ending with a punchline. It's a pleasure to recount these tales. Bill was a great colleague, a loveable guy and a memorable character. God bless him, Mona and their family.
