At his residence on Tuesday September 4, 2001 Major Father Joseph L. Hennessey in his 92nd year, Roman Catholic Priest of the Diocese of London. Dear brother of Madeleine Doyle of Windsor. Predeceased by his sisters Theresa McClelland and Marie Morrison. Survived by several nieces and nephews. Fr. Hennessey was ordained a priest on May 26, 1934 and assigned to St. Peter's Cathedral, London as curate and organist. He was appointed Sr. Chaplain of Military District No.1 with rank of Major in 1941. He served with Department of Veteran Affairs as advisor until October 1946. He was chaplain of Westminster Hospital for many years retiring in 1978 as well as doing prison ministry. Father was a founder of Casa Hogar Orphange in Acapulco, Mexico. He was a former Diocesan Spiritual director of the Catholic Womens League and Faithful Friar of "Dormer General Assembly" Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus and a member of London Inter-Faith and Inter-Race Group. He was an unofficial "assistant pastor" at Holy Rosary Church, London. Visitors will be received at John T. Donohue Funeral Home, 362 Waterloo Street at King St., on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 o'clock. Then to Lie in State at St. Peter's Basilica, 196 Dufferin Avenue, on Friday morning from 8:30 until 10 o'clock when the Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Most Reverend John M. Sherlock, Bishop of London. Interment in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Ingersoll on Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Donations to the J. L. Hennessey Bursary c/o St. Peter's Seminary would be appreciated.
