Obituary of William Smith

Smith William Hamlin-1925-2012 In the words only he could say "Did you know Bill Smith? Well he's dead." Peacefully at University Hospital (or the 4th hole of the old London Hunt and Country Club as Dad remembers it) on Friday August 17th 2012, in his 88th year, surrounded by his family. Predeceased by his wife (Marjorie M.) in 2008 and his grandson Jordan in 1998. Left behind to honour his spirit and carry on with his wit and humor are Leslie K Smith, William H A Smith (Julie) and James Hudson Smith (Julie). Awfully proud grandfather of Justin and Ryan. Brother of Barbara McKim (Ken). Much loved Uncle to the McLaughlins, the Wigles, the Boles, the Shales and the Ottawa gang, the Latimers. Dad had a fun life. As an Insurance Broker for over 40 years, he was well known in the London Business Community. A lifelong parishioner and an usher at St. Michael's Church for over 50 years, parishioners always knew spring had arrived when his yellow convertible was sitting at the back of the church in its usual spot. Sporting some very colorful attire, Dad left his mark on those who met him. An original London Air Show organizer, his love of aviation was the topic of many conversations with his best friend Lori Moro. He loved his Saturday afternoons in the Ceeps sharing stories with his many friends. In his later years, he resided at Windermere on The Mount, Horizon Place and Kensington Village, "God's Waiting Room as he referred to them." He was given great care by Gina (Horizon Place) and we thank her for that. Special thanks to the wonderful caring staff at University Hospital in the Emergency Department (Michelle Blanke) and the staff on the 5th floor. They have a difficult job and they do it so well. Dad was very lucky to have Dr. Robert Luton and Shannen Douglass provide excellent medical care for many years. Dad finally got his wish and has gone to join Mom and all his friends who have passed before him. Visitation will be at the John T. Donohue Funeral Home, London on Monday, August 20th from 2pm-4pm and 7pm -9pm. Funeral mass to be held Tuesday August 21st at 1:30pm at St. Michaels Roman Catholic Church, 511 Cheapside Street at Maitland St., London.Interment at a later date.
