Peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones, our Mom, Kae Sook Kang, passed away at the age of 85 on Monday, May 20, 2024. Beloved wife of 59 years to the late Peter Ki-Jo Kang (2022). Loving and proud Mom of Andrew (Maria), Stella (Andy), Paul (Mikyung) and Jacob (Helena) and her ten grandchildren, Daniel, Lauren, David, Megan, Emily, Joseph, Erin, Nicole, Emma and Alex. Mom was born in Jhang-Sung, South Korea on May 25, 1938. In pursuit of a better life for themselves and more importantly for their children, Mom and Dad made the difficult decision to start a new life in Canada. The family immigrated to Canada in July 1976. Mom worked long hours in various jobs including as a seamstress and a food service worker. Much longer hours awaited her, as Mom and Dad owned and operated Mrs. Cooper’s Convenience Store in the Old South part of the city. For nearly thirty years, Mom worked tirelessly alongside Dad, routinely putting in 12+ hours a day seven days a week. Despite those long hours, however, Mom always found time to prepare our favourite Korean dishes, attend to her vegetable and flower gardens and be actively involved with the Catholic Women’s League. She loved to sing and sing along, as evidenced by her collection of several dozen cassette tapes and CDs of Catholic hymns and oldies but goodies Korean pop songs. It truly took a village to help care for mom throughout this difficult journey. First and foremost, the family wishes to thank Kristine, Hannah and Angeline, mom’s caregivers who provided her with 24/7 care during the latter stage of her life; Dr. S. Mahmud, her family physician; Dr. S. Kane, mom’s geriatrician at Parkwood, Dr. D. Subramaniam and nurse Nelli from the palliative care team in Toronto; McCormick Home dementia recreational staff, and many others. Friends will be received at Donohue Funeral Home, 362 Waterloo Street, London Ontario, Wednesday, May 22, 2022, from 2 to 4pm and from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be at St. Andrew Kim Korean Catholic Church at 258 Clarke Road, London on Thursday, May 23, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery in London.
