I met Maria 5 or 6 years ago at the Sandstone Lodge in Okotoks. We became incredibly close over the last 4 years. She was so very lonely, so I started to spend more time with her. I would take her to the doctor, dentist, lab, bank,and do her grocery shopping for her. I spent countless hours talking to her and playing cards, listening to her stories about her beloved husband Joe and London. She cared so much for her family and her friends back home. When she broke her hip, I was with her through surgery and every day in the hospital, while she was there for months. I followed her to every long term care facility. Every time I would find her she would be so happy! She called me her best friend and told me constantly that she loved me and wouldn't know what to do without me. You were such a gift to me, Maria. Thank you for your love and your time. I walked into her room on the morning of the 5th, just to find a box filled with her stuff. On one hand, my heart broke in a million pieces. On the other hand, I am glad she finally got her wish. Many times over the last couple of years, she prayed to go to sleep and not wake up, to finally be with her husband again. Rest in peace, my dear Maria. Until we meet again. I love you and will miss you!!
