My family and I send our deepest condolences. Mike will always be remembered as a great husband, father, friend, and person. The ceremony was a beautiful tribute to a great guy.
Quick story of how I met Mike. In Grade 12 (long time ago!), my high school soccer team (in St. Catharines) played his school's soccer team (from Hagersville) in the SOSSA Zone Semi-final (the game was in Niagara Falls, I believe). Our team won; after the game, we were celebrating with some beer in the far corner of the field, out of site from our coach, of course! Mike approached us and started talking to us; his cousin actually attended my high school and was a friend; Mike ended up staying with us for a while having a few beers and a few laughs!! I remember thinking "this guy is pretty cool" but also thinking that I would not likely see him again. The next school year, though, Mike moved to St. Catharines and attended my high school - we then became good friends and had some good times through the years. I think this little story encompasses some of Mike's personality traits very well - he is friendly, personable, likable, can get along with anyone, and is always up for a good time!
Mike, buddy, you will be missed but will always be in our thoughts.

Lali was one of my first summer field assistants and undergraduate thesis students after coming to Western in 2006. He completed both BSc and MSc degrees in Earth Sciences and was a very active member of our Department. Like many of our students, he was sought after by the minerals industry and worked for several mining companies before and after graduation. I had the chance to travel and work with Lali in the field in northern Ontario, the arctic, and Spain. He was an avid sports fan and a big Western supporter, often pairing a Leafs/Jays/Seahawks baseball hat with a Western hoodie in the field. As a mature student, having had a career in hospitality before returning to University, Lali was a key leader and trusted member of my early research group. He was always willing to help with a smile on his face and was quick with a joke, which made for a lot of laughter and good times. Go Leafs Go, Go Jays Go, Go Seahawks.
