Sister died on Thursday, May 28, 2020, accompanied on the last part of her journey from a distance, by the Sisters, and by her niece, Libby Houston, and our loving Care Centre Staff.
Sister Mary Winifrid (Agnes) was born in St. Thomas, Ontario in 1921, and joined the Community of the Sisters of St. Joseph in1940. She is remembered with affection by all her CSJ Sisters as well as her niece, Libby (Dunn) Houston (Jim), nephews Michael and Peter Dunn, second cousin, Mary Alice O’Mahony, numerous grand nephews and great grand nephews. Predeceased by her mother, Winnifred (McNamara), father Harry Dunn, her sisters Dorothy (Dunn) Black (Alex), Sister Elaine Dunn, (Margaret), brother, Joe (Marjory), and nephew John Dunn.
Sister Mary Winifrid spent almost 40 years as an elementary school teacher, in London, Woodstock, Ingersoll, Sarnia, Windsor, Tillsonburg, Zurich, and Haney B.C. She truly loved teaching the little ones in the primary grades. Her cheerful nature, kind heart and gentleness endeared her to her students and helped her to face each day with a joyful heart and a positive disposition. After retiring from teaching in 1979, Sister worked as a pastoral assistant at Sacred Heart parish in Ingersoll and later assisted in the care of elderly Sisters in Ignatia Hall at the Mount. Her lovely singing voice touched many throughout the years, as she provided and encouraged music in all her ministries. Even her hearty laughter had a musical lilt to it. In her later years, she loved being part of the Intergenerational Choir, a joint project of the Sisters of St. Joseph, the Alzheimer’s Society, and the music program at Medway Secondary School, where she was cherished by her student buddies. We will always remember Sister Mary Winifrid as a beautiful woman with a song in her heart and a smile on her lips
