Meaden
Peacefully at St. Joseph's Health Centre, London, on Sunday, October 10,1999, Lewis, dear husband of the late Julia Meaden (McManus), in his 91st year, formerly of Thunder Bay. Dear father of Joseph and his wife Mary Meaden (Johnstone) of London. Dear brother in law of Ann McManus of Chatham. Predeceased by his son Paul and his sister Evelyn Meaden. Dearly missed by the Johnstone Family. Mr Meaden was a member of St. Patrick's Parish in Thunder Bay for 75 years until 1988 when he moved to London. There will be no funeral home visitation. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Patrick's Cathedral, 211 Archibald St. S. Thunder Bay, on Thursday morning at 11 o'clock. Interment to follow in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Broadway Avenue, Thunder Bay. Special thanks to Bernadette of Paramed, to the V.O.N. and to the medical and nursing teams of A6 at St. Joseph's Health Centre. Donations to St. Joseph's Health Centre Foundation, 268 Grosvenor Street, London, Ontario, N6A 4V2 would be appreciated. Lewis Meaden was born in 1909 in Jersey in the Channel Islands and emigrated to Canada and to Thunder Bay (then Fort William) in 1912 with his parents Leonard and Minnie. A sister Evelyn was born 2 years later. His father Leonard passed away when Lew was 16, a fact that profoundly affected his life thereafter. He worked 41 years for the Federal Government Dept. of Agriculture in the grain inspection branch. He enjoyed 30 years of retirement; the last 12 spent closer to his family in London Ontario. Throughout his life he was blessed by the companionship of some wonderful women, first his mother Minnie, sister Evelyn and then his wife of 50 years, Julia and in his final years following Julia's death his special friend, Rae Grant. Lew and Julia had two sons, Paul (who died at an early age) and Joseph. Throughout his life Lew took great enjoyment and support from his family, his faith and in the beauties of nature. He maintained a lifelong interest and participation in sports, exercise and physical fitness. He was an avid and accomplished photographer, bridge player and "do it yourself" carpenter. Throughout his life he was blessed with mental acuity and physical dexterity even in his final few days in hospital. He was able to live independently until the final 2 weeks of his life.
