Obituary of Sister Angela Claire Fleming

Sister Angela Fleming (Sr. Mary Gregory) of the Community of the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Diocese of London died peacefully on Thanksgiving Day, October 13, 2008 at the residence of the Sisters of St. Joseph. Sister was in her 85th year and her 62nd year of religious life. Lovingly remembered by her sister, Agnes Kuntz of Chepstowe, Ontario and her many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents Patrick Fleming and Mary McIntyre, her sisters Margaret (Sister Laurentia OSU),Patricia Berdenski, Veronica (Sister Ethelreda, OSU) brothers Father Hugh, Thomas and Gregory. In 1946, Sister graduated from St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing , and entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1947. Sister began her ministry in health care, nursing the sick at St. Joseph's Hospital, London. After receiving a nursing teaching certificate in 1951, she was appointed Director of Nursing at St. Joseph's Hospital, Chatham from 1955-1969 after which she became the Nursing Supervisor for St. Joseph's Hospital London from 1971-1979. In 1980, Sister Angela was appointed Assistant Executive Director at St. Joseph's Hospital, London. From 1982-1985 she was Health Coordinator. From 1985-1990, Sister Angela continued to use her skills as pastoral assistant at St. Joseph's Parish, London. Always interested in developing her talents, she registered for Art Therapy studies at the University of Western Ontario and graduated in 1995. In a spirit of adventure, she relocated to the Northwest Territories in 1995 and spent six years counselling children through art therapy. In 2001, Sister returned to London and continued private counselling. Sister Angela will be remembered by her religious Sisters, her family and friends for her gentleness of manner, her sense of humour, her deep appreciation of beauty. She was a gardener of the spirit. The Community is grateful to the nursing staff for their attentive care of Sister Angela. All services for Sister will be held at the residence of the Sisters of St. Joseph, 485 Windermere Rd. London. A Vigil Service will be held on Wednesday, October 15 at 4:00 P.M. Followed by the Mass of the Resurrection on Wednesday, October 15 at 7:00 P.M. Burial Service on Thursday, October 16 at 9:00 A.M. Interment in St. Peter's Cemetery. John T. Donohue Funeral Home entrusted with arrangements.
