Obituary of Hunter Lawlor Brown

Hunter Lawlor Brown, beloved father, grandfather, scholar, and friend, passed away early on the morning of November 7, 2025 following a brief illness. Hunter taught philosophy and theology for nearly forty years at King's University College, where he was known for his grace, kindness, sense of humor, and the unmistakable twinkle in his eye.

Born on May 3, 1947, in Kingston Ontario into a military family, he spent his early years on army bases before attending secondary school at St. Michael's College School in Toronto. Hunter studied at the University of Windsor, Queen's University and the University of Toronto, earning a PhD in Theology while working as a cab driver and dispatcher. He later returned in his forties to complete a second PhD in Philosophy at McMaster University. He was an expert in the work of William James, and authored numerous books and articles over the course of his career exploring the relationship between faith and reason. Outside of an academic setting, Hunter was also an expert in many other important fields, including manual transmissions, drywall installation, jazz guitar, and milkshakes, to name a few.

Hunter took the greatest pride of all in his role as a father and grandfather. He will be deeply missed by his children Mary-Elizabeth and Andrew, and their mother Susan Mader Brown, as well as his granddaughter Madeleine Brown Trudel, who brought tremendous joy to his later years.

Cremation has taken place, and a Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, November 28th at 10am at St. Peter's Cathedral Basilica in London Ontario, preceded by visitation at 9am.
