We send our deepest sympathies from Winnipeg. We fondly remember Aunt Rose coming with my mom to visit us, both of them watching our young sons curling. I remember Aunt Rose's laugh, her enthusiasm for life, her graciousness. The Cook family spent several summers with the Reilly family at their cottage on Whitestone Lake. I cherish my memories of those lake times we shared.. As a tribute to Aunt Rose, I share this poem, entitled' Whitestone', that I wrote years ago:
Reflections find beauty
in their imprecision;
form blurs into muted colours
extending outwards
the silent swimmers
who cannot sink
The reflections
both define and hide
the horizon
smudging the moment
when shore and lake
embrace
They are part of the lake
a tenant
perhaps a child
one of many
Like reading the proverbial
well-thumbed book
we came again and again
to the familiar places
the named fragments
of this northern womb
- the Narrows
- the hole-in-the-rock (where the big one really did break water and then got away)
- Tom’s Rock, always resting between us and the far shore
- the inlet which sound seemed not to enter
It was a summer place,
our summer place
The lake remains
We are the ones who would
return….changed
yearnin to experience the lake
as we experienced it then
longing to experience ourselves
as we were then
wanting to come again
to the place
where our innocence
found summer rest
a place I remember
in all its patient beauty
