Obituary of Manuel Ferreira Desa

Peacefully, surrounded by family and with saddened hearts, we announce the passing of Manuel at Victoria Hospital on August 6, 2025, at the age of 87.

Beloved husband of Sofia de Sá for 60 years. Loving father (Pops) of Julio (Klara), Margarida (Carlos), and Tony (Laura). Cherished grandfather (Pop Vo) of Joshua, Sofia, Selena, Emma, and furry friend Millie. Missed by his sisters Maria, Bina, and Theresa in Portugal. Predeceased by his parents Julio and Candida, and brothers Joaquim and Alberto, all in Portugal.

Manuel immigrated to Canada in 1959 from his native Portugal. He was a lover of Portuguese folklore music, dancing, and desafios. In his earlier years, he was an active and supportive member of the Portuguese Club of London whenever time allowed. A dedicated working man, he spent many years in construction throughout Canada and was a proud member of the LIUNA Labourers Union, Local 1059. His passion for family and for being surrounded by his loved ones and hunting partners was unmatched.

In 1965, Manuel returned to Portugal where he married Sofia. They soon came back to Canada and spent 60 years building a loving family while helping other relatives and friends immigrate. His garden was always plentiful, offering abundance to anyone willing to accept. His custom-made smoker ensured the best Portuguese chouriço was always available, while the pipo of tinto was shared freely with friends and neighbours. Known fondly as The King of Bridlington, he will be dearly missed by his four grandchildren and by all who had the joy of knowing him. You gave us everything, and now we carry your wisdom and love in our hearts—forever grateful for the life you shared with us.

Visitors will be received at John T. Donohue Funeral Home, 362 Waterloo Street at King Street, on Monday, August 11, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., with the funeral service to follow at 12 p.m. Interment to take place at St. Peter’s Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Manuel to the Thalassemia Foundation of Canada would be appreciated.

“That man is a success—who has lived well, laughed often and loved much; who has gained the respect of intelligent men and the love of children; who has filled his niche and accomplished his task; who leaves the world better than he found it; who has never lacked appreciation of earth’s beauty or failed to express it; who looked for the best in others and gave the best he had.” — Unknown
