My condolences to the Tillman’s Families. I knew Richard from the Financial Services Commission. Although we did not worked in the same department. We often meet at the elevators and special meetings of some sort. He was kind, respectful and quite friendly. I had an opportunity to work in his department but I turned it down. I always regretted it. I’m so sorry for your loss. He will definitely be missed. May his soul rest in peace.

Richard was more than just a roommate during our Queen’s University days from 1982 to 1984 — he was a larger-than-life presence who left an indelible mark on everyone lucky enough to know him. A true gentleman with an endless supply of charm and wit, Richard could tell a story like no other — a gifted raconteur whose laughter echoed through our halls and hearts. He fancied himself a sommelier (even if the wine was often questionable), and his flair for the finer things was matched only by his generosity and good humour. When Richard entered a room, it instantly brightened — not just from his smile, but from the energy and warmth he carried. His effervescent personality drew people in and made them feel like old friends. We have lost a great one, and the world will feel a little dimmer without him. Richard will be dearly missed and forever remembered.

He seemed to be everywhere we went and was eager to share his deep knowledge and love of the small village that was a part of his very being. We will miss Richard at the Food Bank and when viewing the sunset from Pioneer Park. His humour, intelligence and dedication were inspiring. He will always be an integral part of Bayfield to us.

To The Tillmann Family,
I am deeply sorry for the loss of Richard and sending you all hugs. I remember years ago when I met Richard in Bayfield.
I quickly realized why EVERYONE loved and adored this charming man who was so welcoming and made me feel like family.
He was an extraordinary family man and an exceptional friend on many levels. Richard had a festive jazzy vibe surrounded by positive energy!
Richard was a talented chef and hosted such gorgeous dinner parties. I was lucky to be paired with him at a golf outing because he was a patient golfer and enjoyed the shenanigans as well. He was so fun to hang out with and his contagious laugh was tops!
No matter what the season was or where you were, when Richard entered a room, or walked up to a group of family and friends on the beach, or going to the Bayfield parade, watching a sunset from the park, joining in on a card game or even picking me up for church, his smile and presence made life more joyful and extra delightful!
Richard knew how to wet the whistles with his tasty cocktails. His sense of humor and witty character was captivating.
He was an intelligent and humble person along with being dedicated to his profession and community. Richard had the biggest heart and will be greatly missed. As we all cry gigantic tears of sadness, his remarkable legacy will live on forever.
I feel so honored to have known such a classy and thoughtful gentleman. He was so good to me!
Dearest Richard........... I loved making wishes on glittery stars with you in Bayfield. And now, you will be a bright and twinkling star in the sky to me! Rest in peace sweet friend. Love you, Barbie

Dear Richard, our loved and respected cousin.
The Tillmanns arrived ‘en masses’ to North Bay. The cute little tow headed boy spinning on a stool in my parent’s marina restaurant. “What can I have Aunt Lorna, ‘Anything you want Richard’ Wheee”, another spin on the stool as Richard lit up the room.
Leeann met Richard in around the 90’s, meeting him in the lobby of the Sheraton in downtown Toronto, Richard opened his arms to Leeann with a big hug, saying, “now you’re my cousin too Lee”. That was the beginning of a lifelong relationship. Catching up over the years in Toronto, North Bay and his beloved Bayfield, always coming away feeling loved, accepted and understood and always, a celebration.
When same sex marriage was legalized in Canada in 2005, we decided to legalize our 24 year relationship in Quebec City, who else would we want to help celebrate and make it a magical day but Richard and Cathy. Richard arrived with personally designed and made corsages and boutonnières. Of course he did!
Richard, you left us with a profound sense of loss and grief and a void in our lives along with cherished memories and a legacy of their impact on us.
With love, respect and admiration
Your cousins

To The Tillmann Family,
We are deeply sorry for your loss. Richard was so much more than a friend to our family, he was a fixture in our lives and as Gray said, "the heart of Bayfield".
Some our most treasured family memories are the evenings spent at Longuevue. Richard had a way of making everyone feel like they belonged. We'll always remember the easy joy and the genuine connection he brought to every gathering. He not only served a delicious meal- but laughter, conversation and a rousing post dinner game were also on the menu.
Richard was a confidant and an advisor, someone we could turn to, who listened with care and offered his perspective with honesty and heart. He made a lasting imprint on our lives, and we will carry his friendship and spirit with us always.
Love and condolences,
Chris, Karen, Jesse, Quinn, Claire and Gray Potter

I was fortunate to see Richard on March 17 and he was so upbeat about going into rehab. I was in utter shock to hear about his passing.
He was the most generous of people. Even at that visit when he heard my sister was waiting for me in a nearby pub as it was her birthday, he insisted on sharing his candy w her. One of his last texts to me was sending me the ferry to Manitoulin Island as I had mentioned in passing that I might go in the spring. ALWAYS thinking of others, ALWAYS helping.

To all who loved Richard, I am so sorry for your loss. Richard and I were both at Queens at the same time. I can’t remember how we connected, probably a family member said Richard was at Queens. What I do remember is Richard became my Sunday brunch buddy, arriving at my door in residence with a big smile and a huge hug. We spent many Sundays commiserating over shared family stories and hopes for our future. He truly was a great friend to me and a link to London whenever I was a bit homesick. Truth be told he stopped me from giving up and moving back home. I’m sorry I won’t be there on Friday as I will be out of town but I will be thinking of you and sending big hugs. Since 2000, you have been more than just a manager to me at FSCO, you have been a mentor, a confidante, and a true friend. Your genuine kindness, and beautiful soul has touched my life in ways I never imagined possible.
I’ve compiled a collection of our cherished chats because I know I won’t be able to receive them anymore, and as I reflect on these conversations, I am reminded of the overwhelming impact you have had on me. My heartfelt sorrow to the Tillman family, to Cathy his living partner and his close friends who were his extended family in bayfield and beyond. A gentle man with a kind heart and a great appetite for the culinary arts. My apologies for not being able to attend the visitation and provide in person my condolences to the family. My closer bonding with Richard started while living in the bayfield bunker while rattling up and down blue waterhighway in my old ford fair lane 500 - a ladder or two strapped to the roof hunting down poorly maintained cottages to apply our painting trade one summer - after we both were fired from college pro painters in London. I left early that summer to attend ubc leaving Richard with ladders and no car ! He persevered and somehow carried on.

Food wonderful food…
A tribute to Richard Tillmann’s cooking from the McCreas
Everyone knows that Richard was a superb chef. He’s been cooking for years. He aced the George Brown cooking course. He designed a stunning kitchen equipped with every device and utensil imaginable.
The question is; why did he love to cook? … I think you may know the answer.
Others can offer tributes about his affable fun-loving nature, his public service, his leadership, his love of family and Bayfield and so on and on.
I want to reminisce about his cooking. He loved to cook and he was good at it.
Courageous is a word that does not often appears in restaurant reviews, but I think Richard was courageous. He was undaunted cooking huge turkeys for family and friends on special occasions. It was not unusual to feed 30 to 40 highly opinionated food critics at a single seating. I know this because I was often asked to carve one of his perfectly cooked turkeys, which included the best stuffing and gravy conceivable.
(By the way in Hamilton, where I first enjoyed turkey dinners, the turkeys came with two legs. I had not seen a four legged turkey until I met the Tillmanns.)
It was a treat to carve one of Richard‘s turkeys. I must’ve curved between 15 and 20 of those big turkeys over the years. Always the same. Always beautifully cooked.
Anticipation would mount as I unwrapped all those ancient wool blankets and beach towels to reveal that golden crispy behemoth expertly sutured holding back mounds of moist, tasty stuffing.
Richard’s turkeys were terrific, but how about his pate or banana bread or any number of his delicacies. “I’m getting hungry”.
If you were lucky enough to be invited to dinner, you could expect a culinary treat.
So back to where we began. Why did Richard love to cook? Well, he was good at it. He savoured good food, but most of all you know he loved to cook for the people he cared about.

Love and condolences,
Craig Brown
