Maria Adelaide Coutinho March 20, 1928 - November 22, 2021 Died peacefully in her own home, surrounded by family. Maria Adelaide Coutinho was a proud worker, mother, grandmother, and so much more. Her work life began very young as her mother’s helpmate, the eldest daughter of seven children in the small village of Samuel, Portugal. Reliability, conscientiousness and a tireless spirit were what she packed in her bags when she emigrated to London in 1960 and what she instilled by example in her children. She never lacked for employment and was especially proud of her last 20 working years at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Maria learned to embroider and crochet as a young girl and even as a working mother found time for her passion. She made things beautifully and to perfection, which we admired even as children. She came late to knitting, but was soon making complex sweaters which she gifted to many. When someone complimented her on her “golden fingers”, we couldn’t have agreed more! When she retired, she threw herself into her hobbies and embraced travelling, which delighted her and fed her curiosity about the world. At home she loved to bake, trying new recipes and sharing all with family and friends. It’s a point of family pride that her date squares sold out immediately at the annual St. Patrick’s Parish Bazaar and that they became a much-anticipated item each year. Always a walker, new hips in her retirement were Maria's excuse to explore. She would walk several kilometres each day, occasionally stopping to admire gardens and chat with neighbours along the way. Many of her East London neighbours came to know her as the lady who walks. Maria was an avid gardener with a special fondness for roses and a tough love approach to her many houseplants. (“If you don’t smarten up, you know where you’re going - the compost!”) Maria loved to sing and had a lovely soprano voice which deepened to a rich alto in her later years. As a young woman in Portugal, she and her coworkers would sing in harmony as they worked. She sang at home, work and church, and singing became a huge source of connection with Maria in the last few years of her life. Maria's Catholic faith was a very important part of her life and supported her immensely through life's challenges. She attended mass weekly for over 50 years at St. Patrick's Church and prayed daily at home. Her Christian values and her desire to help others were expressed through donations she made annually to many different organizations, perhaps the most meaningful of which were her "families in India." Above all, Maria loved her family. She liked to visit us and help us as often and in whatever ways she could. Maria is beloved by her daughters Grace, Ana, Tereza and Paula, and her grandchildren Mavis and Leo; Tia Lai-Lai will be missed by her Canadian nephews and nieces, as well as those in Portugal. She is predeceased by her precious son Tony, and her six siblings, most recently Olga and Ilidio, who had followed her to Canada. Although Alzheimer's Disease affected Maria's mind and body, it could not extinguish her spirit. She drew love out of those around her, an enduring gift to those privileged to assist and spend time with her in her final years of life. We wish to thank the staff and residents of Glendale Crossing who became extended family during her 3 years of residence prior to returning to her home in 2020. In lieu of flowers the family welcomes donations to the Alzheimer Society of Canada, Save a Family Plan, or a charity of your choice. Donohue Funeral Home, 362 Waterloo Street at King Street, on Friday, November 26 from 3-5 pm. My Tribute Gift Foundation makes this online charitable giving portal web page MyTributeGift.org (the “Website”) available to you subject to your acceptance of and compliance with these terms of use (the “Terms of Use”). Your donation will be processed through My Tribute Gift Foundation for distribution to your selected charity. Your credit card transaction record will appear as My Tribute Gift Foundation. An official tax receipt for your donation will be issued by My Tribute Gift Foundation. Donations are sent out to charities at the end of each month for all donations received in that previous month. So a donation made on the first day of the month would be sent at the same time as one made on last day. Payments would be sent either by paper check or direct deposit. Please note that the there is 3% + 35¢/transaction fee for credit card processing, My Tribute Gift Foundation collects a 5% administrative fee. These fees help fund the cost of processing all donations, issuing tax receipts, and sending all appropriate information to the selected charity. These fees are assumed by your selected charity, but you will receive a receipt for the full amount of your donation. There are NO additional costs the charity has to endure to participate and accept donations through MyTributeGift.org. According to the American Institute for Philanthropy (charitywatch.org) a charitable organization is considered “Good” if they are spending less than 30% on administration and fundraising costs. My Tribute Gift Foundation helps reduce those administrative costs for charities and allows donors to contribute to lasting memorials for their loved ones.
When donating online, if the donation form has an option to add a tip, there is no convenience fee. The tip is optional and can be adjusted before you submit your donation. The amount of the tip will be displayed to you before you confirm the charge to your payment card. Tips are in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount that goes to the charitable organization. Under IRS and CRA rules, tips are not tax deductible to the donor.
You warrant and represent that all information and materials you provide to My Tribute Gift Foundation, through the Website or otherwise, are accurate and truthful and do not violate third party rights. Indemnity. YOU AGREE TO INDEMNIFY AND HOLD HARMLESS THE FOUNDATION PARTIES FROM AND AGAINST ANY AND ALL CLAIMS, DEMANDS, ACTIONS, SUITS AND PROCEEDINGS BROUGHT BY YOU OR ANY THIRD PARTY (COLLECTIVELY "CLAIMS") ARISING OUT OF YOUR USE OF THIS SITE IN BREACH OF THESE TERMS OF USE OR THE INFRINGEMENT BY YOU OF ANY INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS OF ANY PERSON OR ENTITY, INCLUDING ALL LOSSES, LIABILITIES, DAMAGES, COSTS AND EXPENSES (INCLUDING ALL LEGAL FEES) ARISING FROM SUCH CLAIMS.

As a donor, you are responsible for researching the charity, understanding how your money will be used, and understanding the tax implications of your donation. We will email you a receipt, but the deductibility of your donation depends on your individual tax situation. We are not financial, tax, or legal experts. Please do not rely on our information to make decisions about your finances, taxes or legal matters. Consult a qualified professional in your jurisdiction.
Participating organizations have chosen to actively participate in the “Sponsor Program” to be represented in the Sponsor Charity array in an effort to increase their exposure and the opportunity for more memorial donations to be made to their organization. A rate structure is agreed upon and assessed on each donation processed through that program according to each organization’s individual agreement. Giving through that program has helped many organizations realize a drastic and significant increase in net donations.
If a donation form has a line item of Convenience Fee. The Convenience fee is displayed to you prior to approving the charge to your payment card. The convenience fee is in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount reaching the charitable organization. For example, a $100 donation becomes a $101.50 transaction. The convenience fee is directed immediately to a for-profit service provider. According to IRS and CRA rules the tax deductible receipt will therefore only be issued for the subtotal amount.
My Tribute Gift Foundation seeks to distribute all funds to organizations provided they have maintained active 501c3 certification in the United States or registered charity status in Canada. MTG relies on the beneficiary organizations to maintain and keep up to date contact information on file with the IRS or CRA respectively. This must be done in order for My Tribute Gift Foundation to exercise care and reasonable efforts to distribute payment promptly, without undue cost and burden to the foundation. In the event that a payment has not been deposited 12 months from issuance, the foundation reserves the right to utilize those funds in its mission to the foundation.
My Tribute Gift Foundation reserves the right to modify, change, discontinue and suspend these Terms of Use, the Website, and/or any services offered through the Website, in whole or in part, at any time, without prior notice to you. Your continued access or use of the Website after modifications to these Terms of Use have been posted on the Website shall indicate your acceptance of and agreement to be bound by these Terms of Use as modified.
