I met Theresa just after attaining my undergraduate degree and while deciding on the next steps for my career, which ultimately led me to academia. During that time of decision, Theresa was always generous with her time, attention, and wise counsel; she never failed in her encouragement or goodwill during the time I knew her. She brought me in as a valued member on team projects and provided an exemplary model for true collaboration. In me she said she could recognize another “bridge builder” seeking to bring as many good people and unique perspectives as possible to any project—a compliment indeed. I will be forever grateful to have known Theresa as a person with big ideas for the global good who could actually get things done in cooperation with others! I will seek to honor her memory by continuing to talk about the most important things in life with others in every realm of my own life. One of the bright stars in our veterinary epidemiology constellation of trailblazers will no longer be able to increase her light, at least not by her continued activities here on earth. However, I am confident that her light will continue to shine brightly and grow in intensity through the many lives she touched while she was with us on earth. She will be missed deeply but she will live on in our hearts.

I had the privilege to make music with Theresa for nine years in the University of Guelph Symphonic Choir. Every week, we were inspired by her aspiration for excellence, her passionate respect for the music, and her thoughtfulness to those in our musical community, in which she participated until recently. We are deeply humbled by her gift to the choir, and also by the generous way she communicated during her final few months. She impacted so many lives, as a professor, a researcher, a colleague, and a friend. But most importantly, she spoke of her family with the deepest care and affection. An upcoming UG Choir concert will be designed to convey our sadness and respect. In the meantime, these donations to ALS Canada and Veterinarians Without Borders are meant to express my personal empathy with your loss, and to contribute (however humbly) to her life's work. Like so many others I was privileged to be a friend of Theresa. I had known her as veterinary student when I was on faculty but our close association began 30 years ago when we became co-investors in veterinary start-up technology and educational businesses. Tributes are flowing on a variety of media channels . The come from all over the world and the common theme is great respect for the scientist but just as much love for the person. My condolences to the family and close friends of Theresa, I pray you can celebrate her life and find peace in time with great memories. I knew Theresa through our shared involvement in epidemiological tools for disease management, conferences and workshops; but I remember her for her compassion, friendship and enthusiasm. We all like to be involved in meaningful work, but Theresa also brought you on a journey of joyful enthusiasm and consideration for those around her. I would meet her regularly over the years at conferences, occasionally communicate on shared interests by email and in all contacts she was fully engaged and helpful, but always there was also the gift of her personality and generosity of spirit. Naseem and Robert Stecker send deep condolences. We knew Teresa for almost 40 years. Here is a poem in her memory that Robert wrote after learning of her death. To a Scientist She was a warrior for science, a globally connected innovator. Juggled all the things a scientist must do: Research, collaboration, grants, travel. She kept it all in play while caring for a parent in a decline so distressing It kept her up at night. Still able to carve out little spaces For music, friends, gaiety. She kept all these ball in motion, All in the air, Until the diagnosis came a like a cruel sentence. One ball drops, then another, Until there are only balls She didn’t know needed juggling, Like eating, talking, breathing, Dropping, Bouncing, Stopping.

I met Theresa in grade 9 at CCH. We ate lunch together. I was struggling with math. She spent some time tutoring me. I started acing math. the next year I took enriched math. She empowered me to feel confidence in myself and I excelled in all maths throughout high school. She worked at a horse ranch that summer and when she returned my new nick name for her was muscles! She would take me with her at lunch to the band room. Tell me about her adventures on the Byron corner. We were wry different and yet we had a strong connection. I was just telling my grandson who is struggling in math this year in high school about Theresa. I wish I had a chance to say goodbye. Happy you are at peace and will love you forever.

We met Theresa in Trinidad in 1989. All of us newly posted in the island, young Canadian professionals, eager to change the world. We became friends venturing in our weekend outings throughout the country, she was always keen on trying new things. Through the nest 35 years we have followed each other’s journeys and kept a close friendship sharing our common interests. Theresa managed to visit us in most of our nine country assignments. She was always ready for the next adventure, sharing our mutual love of music, food, and good company. Discovering sites in Palestine, dancing the night away in Bogota, shopping till we dropped in Geneva, waiting in line for hours to attend a Stephen Colbert show in New York city or celebrating New Year’s Eve in the streets of Montreal in -30˚temperatures, memories we will cherish forever. Deepest condolences to Mary Sue and the rest of the family. It is truly inspirational how Theresa put her amazing intellect towards important research in the veterinary sciences. We were good friends in high school and kept in touch off and on over the years. Most are aware she was a talented violinist but what impressed me the most about her was her willingness to challenge herself. So she decided one day to become a percussionist in the band and there she was at the back banging on all kinds of things. She was the unofficial leg wresting class champion and would constantly challenge the lads to try to beat her. I never did. Taken too soon, this is a grave loss to society and to me personally. Thinking very fondly of you Theresa.

Dear Dr. Theresa Bernardo, her cherished family, and those whom she loved and cared for: My earliest memories of Theresa were from St. Peter’s Choir and Orchestra School in the 1970s. We were just 10 years old, and Theresa was already the concertmaster of the strings at age 12. Her sister, Mary-Sue, was a classmate of mine and my brother Paul Murray. Then, we had such admiration for Theresa’s demeanour. Always seemingly well beyond her years in maturity, poise, and talents, her quiet voice and gentle smile illuminated her natural leadership. Everyone had such respect for this emerging polymath whom we knew, even then, would master dozens of fields in her life. And so Theresa did. Later on, at Catholic Central HS, Theresa was viewed more as a teacher to us than a classmate; modelling excellence in multiple capacities. To see her walk down the hall, or carefully tuning her violin, or appreciating her astonishingly incisive intellect, Theresa had it all in harmony; and early. In senior biology, with the unforgettable Mrs. Armstrong, Theresa led by example as the one we all knew possessed a scientific calling. It was as though she was living what Mrs. Marie Colette - our Cambridge educated teacher of English - had asked us to do in life…..”wear your great weight of learning as gently as the flowers carry their beauty; for all to see, and touch, and to enjoy as sweet fragrance “. And wow, could she ever dance up a Caribbean storm!!! In the past months I knew she was sick but she didn't want me to tell anyone so she could keep working. ❤️

The CARAPHIN Poem, a celebration for Theresa Bernardo March 16, 2024 The CARAPHIN Poem from The Impossible Uprooting, McClelland & Stewart, 1995 a poem to celebrate the Caribbean Animal and Plant Health Information Network, Trinidad, July 12, 1991. For Theresa Bernardo, April 22, 1958- March 13, 2024, who with enthusiasm and vision worked with all of us to make this launch a grand success. We are all islands you and I. Singing coral, we are delicate and sharp, decked in black spiny urchins, with beautiful stag-horned backup, our brain flowers blossoming. We sing alone in the pan-dancing night. Though we be islands, we celebrate not shores, but what we sling between us, the beauty of our nets, how we get buoyed up, how we leap from coral fires into the sizzling steel-drummed dance. We celebrate the tugs from deep down, the ones that nip and slip away, barracuda, rosy damselfish, rock beauties, hawkfish, sharks, the angels of shadow, the ones that get you in just the right muscle, the heart, with their jazzy style: the slim-bodied trumpets, saucer-eyed porgy, grunts and parrots, sand drums, reef croaker, and the sweet-talking peppermint bass. This dance we live has plenty to set the gills a-tingle. to make the islands bloom, tree, branch and leaf coral, food in the belly, and we, this paradox, all islands, jumping up together, fish skipping over wave-tips in the pan-dancing night.
