Jim an I were classmates in Engineering at Ottawa University in 1960-61. Jim was in Electrical Engineering and I was in Civil Engineering. At that time, "Ottawa U" had a full Electrical Engineering program but only the first two years of Civil were offered so I only had the pleasure of being Jim's classmate for two memorable years. I remember those two years with great affection. Jim was the epitome of someone who was full of life. He always seem to have a big smile on his face. A very bright guy too! There were only a couple of hundred students in the entire faculty at that time and we pretty much knew and associated with them all. We got together every day in the cafeteria at lunchtime to play "hearts" and kid around. We were a pretty social bunch and had great times at frequent parties and get-togethers. Never forget going to a pub on St. Patrick's Day on Elgin Street and well into the afternoon we all got up on top of the tables for a great rousing rendition of "We are the Engineers" - unfortunately the pub owner was not too impressed and threw us out! Have to say that my two years at Ottawa U were amongst the best of my life and being a pal of Jim's was a big part of it! Stan Ralph

Love the photos. Your father was dashing and fun. Our family enjoyed the sailing trips w your family. Skiing at DG as well. My dad has many fond and funny memories! We are so sorry for your loss; we will celebrate his full life and love of family...by your side.

JR was like a Godfather to me. What sticks out in my mind is a summer during my university years when I worked part time as a doorman at the Ceeps in London. After getting all the stragglers out, closing and stacking chairs I would make my way home around 1:30 or 2 am. Driving along Richmond Street occasionally I would see a light on in JR's place on Picton Street and sometimes I would knock on the door. I can recall him opening the door and saying 'Hey Doogs come on in'. We would talk for hours with lots of stories and lots of laughter. My memory of him was of someone with an exceptional talent as a good listener and he made you comfortable to speak about whatever was on your mind. He was very kind to me and I have nothing but great memories of him.

Jim was a mentor for me at a formative time in my life. At 18 years old, he trusted me to look after his first sailboat (aptly named “Great Shakes”) in Clearwater, Florida. What followed changed the course of my life and influenced profoundly the man that I have become. I will be forever grateful for the opportunities that Jim provided, incredible experiences shared and the fun that we had campaigning Silver Shadow together with a crew of exceptional men…fond memories indeed. So, the 3rd photo above is of our grandmother Gabrielle Faribault Plaxton and Grandfather Percy Plaxton with all their children and their first grandchild and the family dog (?Terry?). Jim is seated on Percy’s knee with Iola, George & Gabrielle behind them. Charlie, Carol & Harriet are on the other side with Harriet’s baby daughter Louise. Seated on the floor are Anne & Dawn. Aline passed away as a toddler. Quite a family!

A photo of Uncle Jim and our Dad Charlie (the oldest brother) perhaps in the early 90's?? then later in 2012. Jim was very close to Betty and Charlie and kept in touch through his adult life (even when we lived in Trois Rivières PQ) They were both in the navy, were engineers, successful in business and loved sailing. Jim lived with them during some of his university years. Jim was a generous man who treasured family and he will be missed.

Uncle Jim was very dedicated to his extended family and kept in touch with my Dad - his oldest brother Charles Plaxton - all the way through Dad's declining years. This is a photo from 2010 when Jim was in Kingston to see Dad along with sisters Anne and Dawn. It was a long drive from London to Kingston - but Jim kept coming. Subject: Sail Voile Canada-RELEASE: Canadian Offshore Sailor Jim Plaxton has passed away News Release For immediate release Canadian Offshore Sailor Jim Plaxton has passed away Kingston, October 1, 2021 – Sail Canada honours the life of Jim Plaxton, who passed away peacefully on September 26th in London, Ontario, at the age of 83. The youngest son of 10 Plaxton children in the Rosedale neighbourhood in Toronto, Jim was a navy man, a pilot, an engineer, a sailor, a scholar as well as a very successful entrepreneur and businessman, and he was highly respected by his peers and business associates. Jim constantly strove for excellence as a matter of course, not for personal gain or glory. As an entrepreneur, Jim’s accomplishments included ownership in Great Lakes airlines / Air Ontario, and, subsequent to that, the purchase of C&C Yachts in the early 1980’s. In the world of competitive offshore racing, Jim, known as “JR” to sailing friends & competitors alike, sailed his “Silver Shadow” yachts (C&C43, C&C41 and C&C44) in the 1980’s to victories in Great Lakes, SORC, NYYC Spring & Fall series races, as well as being a key part of Canada’s victorious 1982 Onion Patch/Bermuda Race team along with Don Green’s “Evergreen” and Bob Heron’s “Amazing Grace”. Jim also represented Canada in the Admirals Cup, in England, in 1981. Jim’s “Silver Shadow” campaigns were also instrumental in the early days of Doyle Sails with Robbie Doyle being closely involved in sail development and inventory, as his company began to establish itself as a successful global sailmaker. Jim’s approach to competitive sailing was very much one of team building through inspiration, fairness, and above all great laughter and good times. In doing so, Jim had an immeasurable impact on the lives of many sailors both in Canada and internationally. Jim is survived by daughters Patty Plaxton (John Sheedy) & Tamsin Plaxton, son James Mark Plaxton (Gillian Plaxton), and grandchildren Callum & Kate Sheedy, Gabrielle Plaxton Collingwood as well as Amanda and Olivia Plaxton. Jim’s son, James Mark Plaxton, has carried on his father legacy having successfully campaigned his own race programs throughout the Caribbean with consistent podium finishes. Later, in the Melges 32 and 20 one design classes, he again had several Podium finishes including second overall in the US National Championships and a highly-competitive World Championships.
